Why is learning
first aid important?

Living in Tyneside, along with the rest of the UK, will give us a less than 10% chance of surviving a cardiac arrest outside of hospital. In Scandinavia, our chance of survival increases to more than 3x that, at around 30%. First aid has been taught in Norwegian schools for years now, with basic skills taught to pre- and primary school children and CPR in secondary schools. Children often cannot graduate without it.

To successfully pass a driving test in Sweden, first aid knowledge is required, and in Denmark first aid must be demonstrated to get a job. The Scandinavian Nation is full of Adults and Children who are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to save a life. We need this in the UK.  Tumbles and Grumbles courses run across Tyneside and are delivered in a relaxed, enjoyable and informative way. We aim to inspire and empower both adults and children to be able to keep their family and peers safe in an emergency.

Colleen Hayley

Hello, I’m Colleen! I’m a qualified Operating Department Practitioner (ODP), living in North Tyneside. I’ve worked in busy hospitals for the past 14 years, specialising in anaesthetics. Whilst being in this type of environment I’ve become more aware of the importance of parents, carers and other family members knowing basic first aid and life support skills. However, it also highlighted how few people actually have this vital knowledge.

I’m a mother of two beautiful children who are 4 and 7 and definitely keep me motivated and active. My children often ask me to teach them new skills and like to role play what to do in an emergency. Young people have a natural interest in this – if we start to help teach our kids and show them what to do, first aid will be a lot less scary when they’re confronted with these situations.

Equally, adult friends and neighbours ask for first aid advice. Teaching them has increased their confidence when dealing with minor accidents and ailments and enabled them to feel more in control of the situation.

It was then that I realised I should share my potentially life-saving skills and knowledge with other parents, grandparents, carers and people who work with children and became a part of the Tumbles and Grumbles team.

When on maternity leave, I knew that I wanted to continue to work with children (I’m a teacher by profession) but knew I didn’t want to go back full time. My family are all scientists (doctors/nurses), so the idea of teaching first aid to children really appealed to me, and I wanted to pass some of those skills and knowledge onto the next generation. It is great fun working with the children who are really engaged and retain so much information. I had a parent come and talk to me recently. The parent is a medical professional and wanted to let me know how thrilled she was with what her daughter had leant. She had gone home and loved sharing what she had been doing and loved practising with them. You can’t get better feedback than that!

Testimonials

“One of the best things I ever signed up to do. Caroline delivered a fantastic course for me and my friends in the comfort of my own home. The class was very informative, and we all felt so much better at the end. The session really helps to prepare you for so many different situations. A must course for new mams and dads!”

Janine Marshall

“It’s always wonderful to have you at Kids 1st Nurseries. The children enjoyed learning about bones, recovery positions and emergency numbers. They also learned about the skeleton, a postcode song, the high 5 hand and the danger circle. The children are engaged and eager to listen during your sessions and they are always super fun and interactive, with a child friendly language. Everything is explained in a way that the children will understand, and there’s a lot of effort put into the experiments. The children soak up what you say, because it’s fun learning. Thank you for providing this for our children!”

“This superb short babies and children First Aid course has really set my mind at ease, making me feel more confident and reassured in my ability to help if something awful were to happen. It was informative, practical and very well delivered by Caroline. Overall it has left me feeling that I could do the right thing in the most frightening of situations, and would highly recommend it to anyone, especially for family members looking after babies or young children. Caroline was an exceptional instructor, with a friendly, approachable and down to earth manner.”

“Caroline helped us at Clart About Ltd renew our Paediatric First Aid training. We have really enjoyed the training and I can honestly say that her passion and knowledge shines throughout, she delivers the sessions with such a passion which demonstrates how much she cares about passing her skills and knowledge to us as learners. First aid courses in the past that I have attended are usually delivered from a ‘text book’.

Caroline was also fantastic delivering first aid to my own little boy who ironically broke his arm at school on our first day of training! Highly recommend 5*****”
